As part of the Summer Session 2026, Christian will give a course on ‘The Public International Law Framework of Global Sports’. This course proceeds from a central proposition: public international law shapes global sport to a significant degree – much more than meets the (legal) eye. During a week of lectures, the course will set out how public international law facilitates autonomous self-regulation by sporting bodies and at the same time constrains it, addressing questions of:
- Sporting sanctions (in relation to Russia, Belarus and potentially Israel),
- Human rights claims by athletes (such as Caster Semenya and Claudia Pechstein) and
- The role of the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
Founded in 1923, The Hague Academy of International Law is a world-renowned institution for high-level education in Public and Private International Law. Located in the iconic Peace Palace in the Netherlands, it attracts young professionals and academics globally. This year, around 350 participants from 90 countries will attend the Summer Course on Public International Law.
