FAQs

We set out below some frequently asked questions.

Pupillage

What is the application process?

Applications for pupillage should be made through the OnLine Pupillage Application Scheme (OLPAS) operated by the Bar Council.

What standards are you looking for?

We require candidates to have a first class or high upper second class degree.

Do I have to have a law degree?

No. A substantial number of members of chambers have a degree in a subject other than law. We welcome the diversity that this brings.

How many pupillages do you offer?

We offer 2 or 3 pupillages each year.

What pupillage awards do you offer?

Pupillage awards for 2009 will be £40,000 for a full 12 month pupillage.

Is any part of the pupillage award payable earlier?

Up to £10,000 of the pupillage award may be paid to prospective pupils as an advance in their BVC year.

Mini Pupillage

How do I apply?

You should apply using our standard form, which you can download here or which you can obtain by contacting Claire Halas (chalas@11kbw.com or 020 7632 8500).  CVs will not be accepted in addition to or instead of the application form.

When do I apply?

Normally it is preferable for you to undertake an assessed mini pupillage in the 12 months prior to the time of pupillage interviews (normally in July). If you are offered an assessed mini pupillage and your plans change, you should ask for your mini pupillage to be deferred.

The deadline for applications for assessed mini pupillages is 1 May in the year in which you apply to 11KBW through OLPAS. However, as places are limited and competition is strong, we suggest that you make your application earlier than this date. We will respond to your application as quickly as possible after we receive it.

Do you interview for mini-pupillages?

No. We consider only your application form.

What does an assessed mini-pupillage involve?

There are two aspects: first that we have an opportunity to assess your written and oral abilities; secondly that you have an opportunity to meet as many of us as possible and to see some of the work we do so that you can decide whether to apply to us for a pupillage.

How long is a mini-pupillage?

Normally we invite successful applicants for 5 days. However, we recognise that it may be difficult to accommodate this. A realistic minimum for an assessed mini-pupillage is 3 days, but we do not encourage this as it limits your opportunity to see us. If you would prefer a 3 day mini-pupillage, please let us know on your application form.
