Peter Wallington QC

Biography

Peter moved to the Bar in 1991, after a successful career as a legal academic at the Universities of Edinburgh, Liverpool and Cambridge, where he was a Fellow of Trinity Hall. He was appointed the first Professor of Law at Lancaster University in 1979, and later held a Chair at Brunel University law school. He was appointed to the rank of QC in 2008.
Peter’s practice covers all areas of employment law, acting for a wide range of clients in the public and private sectors. He is also interested in public law cases, and retains a particular interest in education law. His practice has in recent years involved a number of lengthy and complex discrimination cases, and claims under the whistleblowing legislation. Current and recent clients include local authorities, NHS Trusts, Universities and a variety of large and smaller private sector employers, as well as acting for employees against a wide spectrum of employers, and extensive advisory work. As well as extensive experience in employment litigation at all levels, he has considerable recent experience of mediation in high value employment cases.
Whilst an academic, he also acted as a consultant on employment issues to a number of employers, and gained extensive experience in conducting in-company training programmes.

Peter is editor of Butterworths Employment Law Handbook, an Editor of Harvey on Industrial Relations and Employment Law and a contributor to Supperstone and Goudie on Judicial Review and to Tolley’s Employment Handbook. Since 2003 he has served as a part time Employment Judge, sitting at London East until 2009, and since 2009 in Scotland.
